Giotto di Bondone (ca. 1267-1337) was the first medieval artist to transcend the rigid formal canon of Byzantine art. He was also the first to attempt to place his pictorial figures in a visually intelligible, natural-looking spatial setting. At the same time, he was fascinated in depicting the way the human figure behaves in space, in rendering its physical movements and directly expressing its psychological tensions in his art. Giotto's revolutionary innovations - his discovery of three-dimensionality and of plastic, monumental pictorial figures - were soon emulated, as was the natural rythm of his pictorial cycles. These formed the basis of a new expressive vocabulary that gained currency throughout Italy.
