Contemporary companion animal surgery has two very different aspects. The first is the scientific basis of modern surgery, such as the pathophysiology of the underlying diseases, knowledge of wound healing, selection of suture materials, and experimental surgery in laboratories and hospitals. And then there is the craftsmanship, the techniques, and the procedures.

The scientific basis of surgery of dogs and cats has been documented comprehensively and in-depth in several outstanding surgical textbooks during the past decade. The high quality of the contents of these textbooks affirms that companion animal surgery has become a mature discipline in veterinary medicine.

The pictures were taken during surgical procedures in the Companion Animal Hospital of the University of Utrecht.
