Some of the most pressing questions in times of crisis revolve around the issue of national identity. What exactly constitutes the essence of national identity? World Wars I and II, and certainly the Cold War and the 'new chaos' that erupted in the 1990s, have all drawn attention to and shaped the position of small nations. In times of crisis these issues can mean the difference between life and death for a small nation. Although the right to self-determinations - in its various interpretations by small nations and major powers - was a recurrent theme during times of crisis in the 20th century, it has been the subject of relatively little research.
