Freud, Proust, Perversion And Love

Central to this book is the psychoanalytic idea that perversion is the prototype for problems with intimacy, narcissism, lack of gender identity and the sexualization of fear and aggression. To illustrate this idea, the author made an anlyses of the work of Proust in which the development and life history of the protagonist are related and the connection between the child's guilt feelings with regard to his mother and laer sadomasochism is emphasized. No prior knowledge of either Proust or Freud is required to be facinated by the wealth of evidence the author presents of the disastrous results of a 'symbiotic illusion' between mother and son. Dr. Hendrika C. Halberstadt - Freud has been a psychologist and a practicing psychoanalyst for over thirty years. A member of the International Psychoanalytic Association and the Association for Child Psychoanalysis, she is a training analyst and supervisor of the Dutch Psychoanalystic Association. She has published a book on psychodiagnostics of children and adolscents and her work on Proust, female development and other subjects has appeared in national and inernational journals.
