Democracy and Development

Deze Engelstalige bundel houdt de relatie democratie en ontwikkeling kritisch tegen het licht. Achtergronden, inzichten in deze relatie en de dilemma’s komen aan de orde. Wat komt bijvoorbeeld eerst: democratie of ontwikkeling? Of zijn stabiliteit, recht en orde, en veiligheid de echte eerste voorwaarden? En als dat zo is: pleit dat voor dictatoriaal bestuur in bepaalde stadia van economische groei? Actuele vraagstukken in de huidige mondiale context van ‘ post 9/11’ onveiligheid. 'Democracy and Development', the title of the lecture series organised by the Netherlands Chapter of the Society of International Development (SID) and also title of this publication in itself suggests there is a positive relationship between the two. More democracy implies more openness and checks and balances, more accountability and less corruption and all this would be conducive to sustainable development.
Experts in the field give their views on the matter. They all address questions like: what comes first, democracy or development; is there a choice between democracy and stability; can democracy be promoted from outside and many more.
