Waar gaat het over?

Alfred Stevens (1823-1906), a Belgian, caused a sensation in Paris with his paintings of elegant, intriguing and inaccessible women. This successful artist was the chronicler of the beau monde in the second half of the nineteenth century, but it was as a painter of historical and realistic social scenes that he began his career. In 1855, Stevens made his mark at the Universal Exhibition in Paris with a painting of a vagrant woman and her children in the snow. At this time, he was influenced particularly by artists like Gustave Courbet and Dutch interior painting of the 1600s. It was not long before he exchanged this theme for subjects such as studio models, portraits of high-society women and scenes of daily life among the upper classes. His work evokes a joyful Parisian ambiance, inviting comparison with his friends and fellow-artists Edouard Manet, James Tissot and James McNeill Whistler, Stevens had a knack of capturing with precision and conviction the complex emotions of women of the world, while retaining the details of clothing and background.
